Super Eagles' Maltreatment: Apology to Libya? Nothing of such, it's misinformation, says FG

The Federal Government has refuted a Report, which claimed that Nigeria had apologised over the recent maltreatment of Nigerian Football Federation officials and its Senior National Football Team in Libya.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, made this known in a Statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by Alkasim Abdulkadir, his Special Assistant on Media and Communication Strategy.
It stressed that the Report, which was published on October 15 by the Libya Observer, claiming that Nigeria had apologised over the incident was erroneous.
The Statement added that the Minister also expressed the Federal Government’s  strong displeasure over the Incident and the said Report.
According to Tuggar, the Report deliberately aims at gaining Political leverage and causing disaffection among Continental Football Administrators and Fans.
It quoted the Minister as saying that the Report was a blatant misinformation and misrepresentation of the Telephone Correspondence between him and the Foreign Minister of Libya’s Eastern Government.
“Nigeria remains unequivocal in expressing its displeasure and disappointment with how the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) Officials were treated in Libya.
“It calls on the Confederation of African Football to urgently ensure that its Disciplinary Board investigates the matter and imposes appropriate sanctions based on its Statutes,” Tuggar said.
The Minister further explained that the Constitution Drafting Assembly (CDA) of Libya’s Government of National Unity had been summoned by the Ministry to seek an immediate end to the unfortunate Incident.
It said that no Diplomatic headway was made during the Meeting with Libya’s Acting Charge d’Affaires, Imad Aboud, who said the Matter was not under the Jurisdiction of Tripoli, which he represented.
It said that Aboud claimed that the Matter was rather under the Jurisdiction of Libya’s Eastern Government in Benghazi.
The Statement further said that Tuggar immediately  contacted Abdelhadi Lahweej, the Foreign Minister of the Eastern Government, for prompt intervention in order to end the debacle.
“After that, the Aircraft was given the necessary permits to fly, Aviation Fuel was accessed, and both Ministers agreed that the Matter should be de-escalated immediately.
“Even when Lahweej insisted on rehashing untruth about the treatment of Libyan Players in Nigeria, Tuggar once again corrected the misinformation about mistreatment of Libyan Players during the Nigerian encounter.
“He did not apologise or regret the treatment of Libyan Officials and Players because the account was inaccurate,” the Minister was quoted as saying.
“Lahweej proposed a Joint Statement, which the Ministry rejected because it erroneously misrepresented the facts of the Incident.
“Above all, Nigeria only shares a Diplomatic Relationship with the Government of National Accord and not with the Eastern Government,” the Statement added.

CAF probes maltreatment of Nigerian National Team by Libya

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) says it has launched an Investigation into the “disturbing” treatment of Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the Al Abraq Airport in Libya.

The Continental Football Governing Body in an Official Statement on Monday said it had been in contact with both Libyan and Nigerian Authorities to address the Issue.

CAF said it had referred the matter to its Disciplinary Board for investigation and promised to take action against those responsible for violating its Statutes and Regulations.

“CAF has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian Authorities after it was informed that the Nigerian National Football Team (‘Super Eagles) and their Technical Team were stranded in disturbing conditions for several hours at an Airport where they were allegedly instructed to land by the Libyan Authorities.

“The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for Investigation and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations,” the Statement by CAF indicated.

The Super Eagles Team and Officials were held at the Al Abaq Airport since Sunday evening upon their arrival in Libya for the second Leg of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifying Match.

The ValueJet Chartered Aircraft conveying the Team was diverted from landing at the Benghazi Airport, and redirected to land at the Al Abraq Airport.

The Team and Officials were subsequently left stranded at the Al Abraq Airport for more than 18 hours without Food, Water, and other Basic Supplies upon arrival on Sunday.

Reacting to the situation, the Minister of Sports Development, John Owan Enoh on Monday strongly condemned the “obnoxious” treatment of the Super Eagles and said he had escalated the Matter and involved all relevant Authorities such as the Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, the Director General of Nigeria Intelligence Agency, Mohammed Mohammed, and CAF.

Following the ugly development, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced that the Players had resolved not to play the match any longer while the Team are back in Nigeria.

The Super Eagles who currently top Group D of the Qualifiers with 7 points, were billed to trade tackles with Hosts, the Mediterranean Knights of Libya on Tuesday evening in the return leg of the 2025 AFCON Qualifier Match.

The First Leg in Uyo on Friday ended with Nigeria going home with a hard-earned 1-0 win over their North African Counterparts.

14-Oct-2024 Bad Treatment: Nigerian Players resolve not to play AFCON Qualifier against Libya

Bad Treatment: Nigerian Players resolve not to play AFCON Qualifier against Libya

The Super Eagles have threatened to boycott the Return Leg of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifier against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya.

A Statement by Ademola Olajire, Communication Officer in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) explained that the decision was as a result of the obvious maltreatment by the Libyan Government Officials who kept and refused to clear the entire Nigerian Team at the Al Abaq Airport.

“The fatigued Players and Officials have remained nonplussed. This is as the Host Libyan Football Federation failed to send any Reception Team or even Vehicles to take the Delegation Members from the Airport to their Hotel, said to be three hours away in Benghazi.

“The NFF made Arrangements for separate Vehicles for the Team but the plan was unhinged by the diversion of the Aircraft.

“Players have resolved not to play the Match any longer as NFF Officials are making plans to fly the Team back Home,” he said.

The Super Eagles were billed to play Hosts Libya on Tuesday in the Return Leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Nigeria had pipped Libya 1-0 in the First Leg in Uyo on Friday to maintain Leadership of Group D, after Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s 86th minute strike off a cross from Moses Simon.

According to earlier Reports by the Super Eagles Media Officer, Promise Efoghe, the Team left on a Chartered Flight from Uyo to Benghazi on Sunday morning ahead of the Return Leg Match.

But were held hostage by Libyan Authorities at the Al-Abaq Airport on Sunday night for over 12 hours.

Efoghe explained that the Team’s Chartered Aircraft on approaching its Destination in Benghazi, was diverted to another City, more than a two-hour drive from the Original Base.

“Libyan Authorities held Super Eagles, Officials hostage at the Al Abaq Airport in Al Abaq.

“About an hour to landing, the Nigerian Aircraft approaching its Destination, Benghazi was diverted to another City more than two hour drive from the Original Destination,” he said.

The NFF, however denied the claims made by the Libyans, insisting that the logistical confusion surrounding the Mediterranean Knights’ arrival in Nigeria was caused by the Libyan Football Federation (LFF).

The Eagles stay top of the Pool, one point ahead of Benin Republic’s Cheetahs who routed Rwanda’s Amavubi 3-0 in another Matchday 3 Encounter.

Victory for the Eagles against the Mediterranean Knights in Benina on Tuesday night would have virtually sealed a ticket to the 35th AFCON Finals in Morocco.

11-Sep-2024 I did not say goodbye to Super Eagles' Job - Eguavoen

I did not say goodbye to Super Eagles' Job - Eguavoen

Super Eagles interim Coach, Augustine Eguavoen has dismissed rumours making the rounds that he has quit his Role, following Tuesday’s barren draw against the Amavubi of Rwanda in Kigali.

The rumours of Eguavoen’s Resignation started making the rounds, following his Post-Match reaction in Kigali.

This was after Super Eagles 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Matchday two Qualifying Match against Rwanda, which ended 0-0 at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.

However, Eguavoen, who spoke to Journalists after the Team touched down in Abuja, debunked the rumours as false and misleading, saying that he was misquoted.

He affirmed that he was still in charge of the Super Eagles and would sit down with the Federation’s Hierarchy to evaluate the Team’s Performance, following the two Matches played.

“It is quite unfortunate that People would just trigger something that is not correct, and at the situation that we are in now, we don’t need negative Stories.

“I only talked about sitting down with the Hierarchy of the Federation after these two Games to see how we go about prosecuting the next Games.

“But, when I saw that Story, I was kind of really worried and concerned. Whatever People are reading out there is not correct, and I am still very much in charge.

“I am the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, saddled with the responsibility of taking charge of the Super Eagles at this moment, and that’s where we are,” he said.

The Super Eagles will next confront the Mediterranean Knights of Libya at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, mid-October.

This is contained in a Statement by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, on Saturday in Abuja.
