FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike and Board and Management of South-South Development Commission
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on
Wednesday said Nigeria’s democracy faces no threat and remains firmly
stable.
He stated this while receiving the Board and Management of the new South-South
Development Commission led by its chairman,
Chibudom Nwuche, and Managing Director, Usoro Akpabio.
He dismissed recent comments by factional PDP Chairman, Tanimu Turaki,
describing them as reckless political indulgence aimed at inciting national
tension.
He condemned what he called “dangerous and irresponsible
rhetoric” after Turaki alleged genocide against Christians and claimed
Nigeria’s democracy needed foreign rescue.
Wike said such remarks threaten national security and
misrepresent Nigeria before the international community.
“You have internal crises in your party, yet you go on
television alleging genocide against Christians,” he said.
He added that such claims portray the government as committing
atrocities, noting that investigations into them were met with unfounded
outcries.
He said calling on foreign figures to “save democracy” was
irresponsible, arguing that respect for lawful orders must guide political
conduct.
Wike stressed that Nigeria’s democracy remains stable, adding
that the real danger comes from politicians who deliberately promote incendiary
narratives.
He said political leaders must accept responsibility for
internal failures instead of shifting blame or encouraging impunity.
Wike advised the SSDC leadership to avoid distractions or
external pressures that could derail the Commission’s development mandate.
He warned that past regional bodies collapsed under corruption,
divided loyalties and poor leadership practices.
He told them that development in the region depends on personal
commitment, not the desire to claim status or influence.
He said many appointees lacked dedication, stressing that only
hard work would justify their appointments and support President Bola Tinubu’s
Renewed Hope Agenda.
Wike criticised past interventionist bodies like the NDDC,
saying contractors arrived “with portfolios” while huge funds produced limited
results.
He urged the SSDC not to repeat such failures, particularly
duplicating projects, awarding political contracts or neglecting community
engagement.
He asked the board to work cohesively, maintain discipline,
avoid liabilities, resist undue pressures and ensure prudent financial
management.
He commended the commissioners and directors, saying the region
expected distinct and exemplary performance.
He urged them to show the South-South region in a positive light
and give the President confidence in their appointments.
Akpabio said her delegation came to strengthen institutional
relations and deepen collaboration with federal bodies and key stakeholders.
She said the Commission would support regional development
planning and ensure the South-South remained central in policy implementation.
She assured the Minister that the Commission would uphold its
mandate and work to advance economic growth across the region.
She added that the liaison office in Abuja would be strengthened
to improve engagement with federal agencies.
